Cambridgeshire Junior Badminton Ladder

Unfortunately, due to various factors the Cambs Badminton Academy will not be running the county junior leagues this season. This will obviously be a great disappointment to some people and we are conscious of this. We are also aware, though, that there is a great chasm in badminton competition for juniors in Cambridgeshire and, although the league is great for creating competition for teams of young players there is still a great need for competition that would suit individual players of all ages and abilities.

This is why we would like to test run, this coming season, a format of competition in the county that was started this summer and which was used primarily as a selection tool for the county junior squads. It basically amounts to a county junior badminton ladder and is open to any junior of any age or ability. As with any tournament/competition the different age groups will play separately and hopefully each age group will see players across the spectrum of ability get onto the ladder.

There will be a singles and a doubles ladder and juniors can enter either or both. To start the ladder in the first ´match´ session, players from the ´county´ end of the spectrum will be placed at the top of the ladder and players who are relatively unknown will be placed lower down. There will be several rounds of games played on each match day, with players either moving up or moving down the ladder, depending on the results of their games. By the end of each session, each player or doubles pair will be placed where they should be in the county ladder. Hopefully, by the end of the season, players will be able to see progression in their results!

There will be three match days for the ladder this season and they will be on the days originally allocated to the league matches. Players are not obliged to attend all three events but, if they are interested in being noticed at ´county´ level then playing at all three could help! Conversely, we also want to see juniors who are just starting their playing career enter.

The age groups will be U13, U15, U17 and 17-21. Nylon shuttles will be used to keep costs down. Cost per ladder match, including doubles and singles, will be £5. Players can turn up on the day and pay, as long as they attend at the times published for each age group. Match dates are:

  1. 10th December at CRC, Cambridge
  2. 28th January at Stanground College, Peterborough
  3. 3rd March at Bushfields Sports Centre, Peterborough
